History

Rishikesh’s roots run deep in mythology. It is believed that Lord Rama did penance here for killing Ravana, and his brother Lakshmana crossed the river using a jute rope, where the iconic Laxman Jhula stands today.

In modern history, the town shot to global fame in 1968 when The Beatles visited the ashram of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi to learn Transcendental Meditation. Today, it remains a spiritual hub attracting seekers from every corner of the globe.
